Rules and Regulations
2010 Tournament - Oldtimers' Rules Apply
1. No body checking and no slap shots***
2. Helmets are mandatory.
3. No alcoholic beverages are allowed in the arenas. ( this is a City of Red Deer bylaw)
4. Participants are expected to behave in a gentlemanly and sportsmanlike manner. The organizers and the tournament are not to be held responsible for injury occurring during the tournament. Waivers will be available on site, but if you like to be prepared, click here for a waiver (mandatory)
5. *** As in 2006, the redline will be removed from play for the purposes of two line offsides.
6. *****Penalties
As was the case in 2006, penalty shots will be used. Instead of 3 and 5 minute penalties, minor and major infractions will be penalized by the awarding of penalty shots. For a minor penalty, the penalized player must leave the ice for the next shift and the offending player will be identified by the referee and recorded on the game sheet. The player who was fouled will be awarded the penalty shot. In the situation of a major penalty, 3 things will occur: the offending player will be ejected regardless of intent, a penalty shot will be awarded to the other team and after the penalty shot the offending team will play shorthanded for 5 minutes during regulation time and 7 minutes during stop
time.
7. Game ejection. Occurs in the following situations.
- 1 major penalty regardless of intent.
- 3 minor penalties in a game
- fighting
8. Tournament ejection. Occurs in the following situations.
- Occurs when a player is ejected for a second time because of three minor penalties.
- Fighting
- Any time a major penalty occurs resulting in ejection from a game and the referee feels that there was any purposeful intent to injure. High sticking is considered a major penalty regardless of intent. If the referee feels that a high sticking infraction has occurred but is accidental, the player is ejected from the game but may play the next game unless it is a second time offense.
*** Slapshot rule: A slapshot is considered to occur when a stick is brought above the knee before releasing the puck. The judgement is left to the discretion of the referee. A minor penalty is assessed with the offending player being entered on the game sheet, taken off the ice for that shift and a penalty shot is awarded.
** A puck knocked down by a high stick will result in the play being whistled down if the offending team takes possession of the puck. No penalty is assessed.
*Pucks shot over the boards by a defending team in their own zone will be treated as a penalty. The team getting the penalty shot must assign a player to take a shot who was on the ice.
Overtime/Shootout Format
- At the end of regulation each team will choose 5 shooters. It is not necessary that they be on the ice at the end of regulation.
- All 5 shooters from each team will alternatively be given the chance to score.
- If there is still a tie after 5 shooters, new shooters from each team will alternate in a sudden death format.
- If one team runs out of shooters, they may go back to the top of their order in which case the other team may also return to the top of its order at the same time.
